Since 1994 the Development Bank of Southern Africa has contributed R8 billion towards bulk water infrastructure to ensure expanded access to water. Our support for projects goes beyond monetary disbursement as we also bring in a skill development component for municipality personnel in order to ensure sustained technical capacity in infrastructure management, safeguarding the long-term viability of the project. In partnership with key water corporations and local governments, we strive to reduce poverty in South Africa and the Southern African Development community region.

How can the water sector be managed sustainably?

The challenges of sustainable delivery and management of water services in South Africa, and indeed the world over, are largely linked to governance problems. South Africa’s water sector policies and legislation are lauded as one of the best in the world, but the implementation has continued to be a challenge. What exactly needs to be done has to reach the ears of decision makers in a manner that creates a sense of urgency. Perhaps talking to the following questions can help to achieve sustainable management, as a business, of the water sector:

(1)  What should be done to enhance the implementation of our good policies and legislation?
(2)  What can be learnt from the past experiences of delivering water services?
(3)  What should be the ideal role of financial institutions like the DBSA?
(4)  What is the scope for public-private and public-public partnerships
