Cities and Climate Change: Responding to an Urgent Agenda
Dissemination and Dialogue Workshop

Nov 2-3, 2010
DBSA, Midrand, South Africa

This workshop is a follow-up of the 5th Urban Research Symposium which took place in June 2009.The Symposium raised and tried to answer questions around the impacts of city and urban growth on climate change; measuring and anticipating the consequences of climate change on urban quality of life, city assets, and local and national economies; and assessing alternatives to increase the resilience of cities and related costs and incentives required for successful implementation.

African cities face a particular challenge in this regard: their urban population has dramatically surged over the past decades; climate change is already imposing a burden on them. At the same time, opportunities exist for African cities to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

This workshop aims at (i) communicating the current state of knowledge in the field of cities and climate change, as reflected in a selection of the research teams’ papers presented in Marseille, and (ii) promoting exchanges of views among researchers, African city representatives, the private sector, and civil society organisation representatives.

The Dissemination Workshop will relate the existing research to concrete challenges that African cities are currently responding to and will discuss the practical issues which are faced by decision makers as well as other players who contribute to planning and managing urban affairs.

This workshop is organized by the Development Bank of Southern Africa, the World Bank, the French Ministry for Ecology, Energy, Sustainable Development and the Sea, and the French Development Agency.
